Nike followed up the release of the Air Jordan 11 with another certified masterpiece: the Air Jordan 12. One of the most stylish and top performing Air Jordan sneakers in the collection’s history, the Jordan 12 was front and center when Michael Jordan led the Chicago Bulls to yet another NBA Championship in 1997. It was also on Jordan’s feet during an iconic moment in his legendary career: the “Flu Game.” Playing through illness, Jordan wore the Air Jordan 12’s original “Bred” colorway, or the “Flu Game,” as it's also known as, while scoring 38 points in an improbable effort in Game 5 of the ‘97 NBA Finals against the Utah Jazz. As you can probably guess, the Jordan 12’s legacy was all but defined in that extraordinary game.
The Jordan 12 was released in five original colorways: the “Bred,” “Cherry,” “Playoff,” “Taxi, “ and “Obsidian.” Of the lot, the first four were worn by Jordan in the NBA, with the “Obsidian” Jordan 12 being more of a lifestyle colorway. The classic basketball sneaker was designed by Tinker Hatfield, and its design was reportedly inspired by a women’s fashion shoe and Japan’s “rising sun” flag. The Jordan 12 was the first Air Jordan shoe with Nike’s Zoom Air cushioning technology incorporated into its midsole.
