History of Nike Air Max

Conceptualized by legendary Nike footwear designer Tinker Hatfield in 1987, Nike Air Max is the most innovative and popular technology in not only the brand’s history, but in the history of sneakers, as well. Air Max blends comfort and style like no other form of sneaker tech, and that’s been evident ever since the original Air Max shoe, the Nike Air Max 1, all the way through the most recent iteration of the series.

The original Nike Air Max is the Air Max 1, which was designed by Hatfield and released in 1987. Inspiration for the design of Air Max technology is taken from Centre Georges Pompidou art museum, a unique building located in Paris, France with an inside-out appearance that features its structural elements on the outside of its design. Like the famous building, Air Max reveals the inner workings of its design for all to see.

The Air Max 1 was born into the sneaker world as a performance running shoe. The shoe was included in the “Air” pack that also featured the Nike Air Safari, Nike Air Trainer 1, Nike Air Sock, and Nike Air Revolution. A series of now-famous commercials helped create hype for the shoe, which was quickly picked up by both runners and folks looking for a sneaker at the cutting edge of style and comfort.

After the Air Max 1, Nike and Hatfield went on to continue the series in spectacular fashion by creating the Nike Air Max 90, Nike Air Max 180, Nike Air Max 93, Nike Air Max 95, Nike Air Max 97, and more. Each new entrant into the Air Max collection elaborated on the previous model, sometimes by modifying the size of the visible Air bubble, other times by reconfiguring its placement under the shoe.

The Nike Air Max collection, like many of the brand’s other classic styles, are still as popular today, perhaps if not more so now than ever before because of collaborations. The Air Max 1 has been used in projects with Patta, Travis Scott, Concepts, and more in recent years. Other Air Max collaborations that have withstood the test of time include Undefeated’s Nike Air Max 97, Off-White’s Nike Air Max 90 from “The 10,” Atmos’ Nike Air Max 1 “Animal Supreme,” and so many others.

Now several decades into its product cycle, the Nike Air Max line is firmly established as one of the greatest shoe collections in the world. With excitement surrounding the series’ most classic colorways and new-school collaborations as palpable as ever, it appears as if Air Max hype is, quite obviously, here to stay.
